The curriculum entails a diverse range of subjects, including:
- Understanding applicable regulations governing safe hoist usage
- Conducting comprehensive pre-start/shift inspections of hoists and documenting findings
- Executing thorough operational inspections of hoists and recording results
- Operating hoists according to manufacturer operators’ instructions/manuals
- Loading hoists with passengers or cargo in compliance with manufacturer guidelines
- Safely and efficiently delivering passengers/goods
- Precise hoist stopping at designated levels
- Proper usage of safety gates
- Performing emergency lowering tasks as permitted by company policy
- Adhering to designated hoist safety parameters during operation
- Placing hoists in out-of-service mode, isolating, and securing them
- Recognizing operational limitations while using hoists
- Reporting any defects or issues
Upon course completion, candidates should meet the required standards stipulated by the Technical Safety BC theory exam for hoist operation. Successful completion of the Elevating Devices Operator Exam leads to an Elevating Devices Operator Certification Card. Candidates are responsible for booking the exam and related fees.
